Yellowstone Reef dive site, This ancient coral shelf is adorned with a reef featuring a gradual slope on top, yet with steep sides that sharply descend from 18 to 30 meters, creating mini-walls and canyons in certain sections. As recreational divers, we typically start at the base of the wall and embark on a loop dive over the reef.
Finning gently with the tidal current flowing through the adjacent sandy channel, we encounter an array of marine species, from stingrays and napoleon fish to groupers and black corals among the sea fans and sponges.
As we ascend to the reef’s top, we pass through shoals of reef fish and enter Yellowstone, a vast and clear underwater meadow teeming with healthy and diverse marine life.
For those geared for tec diving, venturing deeper than usual takes us past 30 meters, following the sandy bottom with the reef on our left. Here, we explore three deep pinnacles where larger fish species are often spotted.
While sharks are rare in Aqaba, caution is warranted as we descend to around 50 meters, where the depth steeply increases. The area boasts colorful and robust sea fans, corals, numerous pinnacles, canyons, and archways awaiting exploration. Yellowstone Reef stands as an underwater paradise housing a remarkable variety of marine life, from the shallows to the deepest depths of tec diving.
