The Umbria is a legendary shipwreck located off the coast of Port Sudan, Sudan. This Italian cargo ship, built in 1912, was intentionally scuttled in 1940 while carrying a massive cargo of munitions and supplies destined for the Italian forces in Eritrea. Today, it lies peacefully on her port side, offering one of the most unique and historically significant wreck dives in the world.
Despite the ship’s tragic end, the Umbria has become a thriving artificial reef. A variety of marine life has made the wreck their home, including schools of colorful fish, large groupers, and even occasional visits from sharks and rays. The undisturbed cargo, such as crates of wine and Fiat cars, provides a fascinating backdrop for underwater exploration and photography.
