Laguna Reef consists of two parts, North Laguna and South Laguna, located on the western side of Tiran Island in the Straits of Tiran, near Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, in the Red Sea. It’s a popular dive site known for its beautiful coral formations, diverse marine life, and easy drift dives.
Type of Dive: Drift dive, usually from south to north depending on the current.
Suitable for: All levels of divers due to the mild currents and shallow depths.
Highlights: Beautiful coral formations, including table corals, gorgonians, fire corals, and soft corals. Diverse marine life, including butterflyfish, glassfish, sharks (whitetip reef sharks and leopard sharks), and occasional sightings of larger pelagic species.
Depth: The average depth is around 20 meters, with a maximum depth of 25 meters.
Divers typically enter the water south of the South Laguna beacon and drift along the outer wall of the reef. The wall is teeming with colorful coral formations, including stunning table corals, vibrant soft corals, and gorgonians. Divers can spot various fish life throughout the dive, from butterflyfish and glassfish swimming amongst the corals to larger predators like sharks and occasional sightings of pelagic fish.
North Laguna vs. South Laguna
North Laguna, This area is accessible only in good weather conditions due to stronger currents. It’s known for its large colonies of table corals and fire corals.
South Laguna, This is the more popular area for diving due to the easier drift dives and calmer currents. It offers a variety of marine life and beautiful coral formations.
