Site Description Woodhouse Reef

Woodhouse Reef is the longest reef of the four in the Straits of Tiran, located in the Red Sea near Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. It is a popular dive site known for its diverse marine life, stunning coral formations, and wall that starts from the surface and reaches depths of about 45 meters. Type of Dive: Drift dive, usually from South to North. Suitable for: All levels of divers and snorkelers. Highlights: Wall with crevices, coral formations, sandy plateaus, coral gardens, and the chance to spot eagle rays, turtles, sharks, and other marine life. The wall starts at the surface and reaches depths of about 45 meters. The sandy plateau is usually around 15-20 meters deep. Here are some additional details about the different areas of Woodhouse Reef: The dive typically starts at the southern part of the reef, where divers descend along a wall teeming with marine life. Divers can find crevices inhabited by giant morays, groupers, and pufferfish. After the wall, the dive transitions into a sandy plateau filled with beautiful hard and soft coral pinnacles. This area is a great spot for observing eagle rays, turtles, and larger pelagic species swimming along the drop-off. Halfway through the dive, there’s a canyon along the reef at about 25 meters deep, which opens up into a coral garden with sand alleys. This is where the current usually starts to pick up. It is important to note that the northernmost part of the reef, known as “The Saddle,” can experience strong currents and turbulence, especially during choppy seas. This area is generally not recommended for divers unless they are experienced and have a good understanding of drift diving. Overall, Woodhouse Reef is a fantastic dive site that offers something for divers of all levels. With its diverse marine life, stunning coral formations, and interesting underwater topography, it is no wonder that it is a popular spot for divers visiting Sharm El Sheikh.
