Um El Faroud, a Libyan oil tanker scuttled off the coast of Wied iz-Zurrieq in 1998, is a premier wreck dive in Malta, especially for recreational divers. The 115-meter-long wreck sits upright on the sandy bottom, offering penetration opportunities for experienced wreck divers. Broken in two during a storm in 2005–2006, it has become a captivating site, with sections nearly aligning. With a maximum depth of -40 meters, it is accessible to advanced free divers and scuba divers with a Deep Specialty License and Wreck License. This massive wreck, sunk after a tragic explosion, is among Malta’s biggest wrecks, attracting divers with its visibility and the magnificence of the underwater giant.
